Four years ago Manchester United spent £80 million to buy Harry Maguire from Leicester City. He is still the most expensive defender of all time, but in the meantime, he has fallen from grace. In 2021, he was arrested in Greece and has never been himself since then. Erik ten Hag told him there is no place for him in next season’s roster and United are ready to let him go. So far there seem to be two Premier League clubs willing to pay £40 million for him.
The 30-year-old centre-back spent four seasons in Manchester, wearing the club’s shirt 174 times and winning one trophy, the 2023 EFL Cup, as team captain. This season was hard for him, as his manager prefers using the duo of Varane and Martinez and even uses left-back Luke Shaw out of position more than his captain.
It is interesting that despite having an abysmal season with United, Maguire was absolutely brilliant for England during the World Cup. Perhaps that is the reason why there are two clubs willing to pay £40 million to acquire him.
Initially, United asked for £50 million or even more, but have lowered their demands.
West Ham United and Spurs are interested in bringing the England international to London. Wert Ham had a horrific Premier League campaign but reached the Conference League final while Tottenham also underperformed. For Spurs in particular, Maguire is seen as an alternative, as the number one option for the centre of their defence is Aymeric Laporte.
