9. Kosovare Asllani

Nationality: Swedish
Club: AC Milan
Position: Attacking Midfielder

Sweden’s vice-captain, behind legendary Caroline Seger, is not only one of the best players in Europe but also one of the most beautiful ones we will see at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. In the last World Cup, she won the bronze medal with Sweden, and she also has two silver Olympic medals. In 2022, she won the inaugural Women’s Golden Foot Award.

8. Jessica Miclat

Club: Eskilstuna United
Position: Midfielder

Born and raised in California, she could represent either the USA, Mexico, or the Philippines. She chose her mother’s home country and in 2022 she won the AFF Women’s Championship with her national team.

7. Denise O’ Sullivan

Age: 29
Nationality: Irish
Club: North Carolina Courage
Position: Defensive Midfielder

A member of the NC team that won the NWSL Championship and Shield in 2018 and 2019 (no other team in the league’s history has won both in the same season), O’Sullivan started her career as a striker but has thrived as a deep-lying playmaker.

4. Melanie Leupolz

Nationality: German
Club: Chelsea
Position: Midfielder

After a long career with Freiburg and Bayern, Leupolz moved to London for Chelsea, where she has been playing for the past three years (missing nearly one full season to give birth). She has won an Olympic gold and a Euro with Germany and hopes for her first medal at a Women’s World Cup.

3. Guro Pettersen

Position: Goalkeeper

A late bloomer, Guro Pettersen started playing regular first-team football in the past few seasons, and broke into the national team. Before going back to Valerenga for a third stint (this time as a starter), she scored the goal of the season in Norway, for Pitea, beating the opposing goalkeeper from the midfield.

2. Alex Morgan – USA

Position: Striker

A two-time World Champion and one-time Olympic Champion (and an absolute goalscoring machine), Alex Morgan is one of the most recognisable female footballers in the world. The 2023 Women’s World Cup will most likely be the last of her illustrious career and she certainly wants to lift the trophy one more time.
