It was 104 days ago when we last saw Champions League football. Back then, France was still the reigning World Champion, Cristiano Ronaldo was playing for Manchester United, and (most importantly) Kanye West was still married to Kim Kardashian. Many things have changed in the world since the 2nd of November 2022. Our passion for the Champions League is not one of them. The biggest stage of football is back and so are my Champions League betting predictions.
The Champions League Round of 16 starts with two great games. The two dominant forces in France and Germany, namely Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, face each other, while Milan and Spurs fight at the same time in Italy.
Were those single-elimination matches, or if the away goal rule was still a thing, the approach would be different. But this is the… equal opportunity era. So I am going to base my picks on this fact.
Two of the favourites to win the Champions League face each other early in the competition, meaning one of the two will go home earlier than anticipated. None of the two opponents is in a good state. Last Saturday I picked Monaco to win over PSG and I won. You can see that without Mbappe, Messi, Verratti, and Hakimi, this is not the same Paris Saint-Germain. That being said, Hakimi will certainly play tonight, while his best buddy, Kylian Mbappe, is also likely to start, even though he is not 100%.
But at the same time, Bayern are equally as unstable. They finally recorded a win in the Bundesliga, but they are not to be trusted. And why would they be? Their starting striker is Choupo-Moting, a player who wasn’t good for… Stoke City. Yes, Bayern have other alternatives to put the ball in the net, but I cannot back them just based on that.
What I see is that the two teams have defensive issues. I wouldn’t rule out a 1-1 draw, but they are both so unpredictable that I cannot confidently take that risk, using my deposit bonus bet. I will, instead, go for an anytime 1-1 scoreline.
Here is where my Champions League predictions are a tough nut to crack. Appart from a magnificent Olivier Giroud, Milan are absolutely horrible as of late. As for Tottenham, you never know what to expect. Will they be the absolute force that beat City 1-0, or the abysmal group that lost to Leicester 4-1?
This is that king of first legs that will have both opponents try to preserve things ahead of their second encounter in London. A 0-0 or 1-1 draw is written all over it.
