Europa League betting picks: Don’t be afraid of taking a risk
The Champions League matches on Tuesday and Wednesday were fascinating. We already know the first four teams of the Quarter-Finals. But European football is not over yet for the week. I took a thorough look at the 15 European matches of the day (Lazio vs AZ Alkmaar was already played on Tuesday) and I came up with two Europa League betting picks, plus a small something from the Conference League.

Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal Europa League Prediction
Arsenal are a team on a mission. They keep on winning and now the Premier League title is a realistic goal. Sometimes it is done the easy way, like the 4-0 victory over Everton. Other times it is in a dramatic fashion. Like coming from two goals down to beat Bournemouth with an injury-time goal. They did that again less than three weeks ago, when they won the game with Aston Villa, in Birmingham, with two goals after the 90th minute.
Mikel Arteta’s super babies score in buckets, but they are not immune to strong opposing offences. Sporting is such a team. The Lions have scored in all but one of their 8 European matches this season (six for the Champions League group stage and two for the Europa League playoffs). The game where they didn’t score was that 2-0 home defeat to Marseille, where the Portuguese were one man down after just 19 minutes and finished the match with two red cards.
I understand that the best bookmakers expect the two teams to be careful, knowing that there is a second leg in London next week. But, honestly, I cannot see any of the two opponents altering their identity that much. And their identity is of two attack-first teams. The Over 2.5 goals option is offered at too high of a price, in my eyes.
Juventus vs Freiburg Europa League Prediction
If you want a summary of this year’s Juventus team, just take a look at the Moise Kean incident last Sunday. He was sent off just 40 seconds after coming on the match against Roma, which solidified his team’s defeat to a team that lost to Cremonese a few days earlier. What did Juventus do about it? Two days later, they paid 28 million pounds to permanently buy Kean from Everton.
As for Freiburg, they are a team that should be an example for every club in Europe. Their manager, a Freiburg native, works for the club since 1995 and is the first team boss for 12 years now. Christian Streich was trusted when the team was relegated in 2015, and since then Freiburg has been on an upwards trajectory. They finished sixth in last season’s Bundesliga and this year, qualification for the Champions League is the number one goal. It all starts with excellent youth facilities, a healthy financial policy, managerial stability, and a new state-of-the-art stadium.
So we see a club that brings a healthy aura play one of the most problematic squads in Europe. I don’t have a reason not to back the Germans to win, or at least get a draw out of this Europa League Round of 16 game.
Basel vs Slovan Bratislava Conference League Prediction
Since I mentioned Freiburg’s Europa Park, I will stay in the neighbourhood, even if we have to cross the border to Switzerland. After all, Germany’s Freiburg, Switzerland’s Basel, and France’s Mulhouse are so close that they share an airport, the appropriately named “EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg.”
Let’s get back to football though, as aviation is probably not among your interests. Basel’s game plan is simple: we know we have a pretty terrible defence, so we will try to score more goals. So far in 2023, Basel have scored 20 goals and have conceded 15 in 11 games. That is an average of 3.2 total goals per game.
The exact game thing can be said about Slovan. Taking the same sample, in their last 11 official matches, the Slovak champions have scored 23 and have conceded 15. This is an even greater average of 3.5 goals per match. I will back the over 3.0 goals option, meaning that if exactly three goals are scored in the game, the bet is voided and I will get my stake back, but if four or more are scored, then I am paid way more than if I wagered on the standard over 2.5 option.
