I find Thursdays always thrilling because I love the football out of the Champions League. Today, in my Europa League predictions, I will try to explain the thoughts behind this eveningâs betting choices. We have the Europa League knockout playoffs second leg, where almost none of the matchups are already in a clear conclusion, as only Sevilla won by a high margin last week.
This was the most fascinating match of the first leg, near only to what happened in Camp Nou. Monaco was leading the score at halftime (0-1), Leverkusen scored twice just before 60â, but before referee Grienfeld blew the final whistle, the French team had already taken the lead back. Monaco has won each of its last three away games at a point in time when Leverkusen has lost four of its last five matches overall.
The most important fact though is both teamsâ ability to create chances and score many goals. Both sides have scored in eight of Monacoâs last nine matches and this will be the clue of todayâs encounter. Leverkusen is not loyal to its defensive duties, meaning that we can see more than 2 goals.
The away fansâ atmosphere was not the only interesting thing in Amsterdam Arena last week. Unionâs spectators lead the way and the team was better than Ajax, but couldnât find the net, despite its many chances. In the Bundesliga, the Germans were unable to beat Schalke and reach the top spot of the standings, showing that maybe having the motive to play in such huge competitions at the same time is not something easy.
But Union is one of the most well-trained teams in Europe and against a very confused Ajax (which recently changed its coach, hiring former legend Heitinga) will find a way to prevail and reach the Last-16 round. Ajax beat Waalwijk and Sparta Rotterdam recently, but none of them can reach the level of Union Berlin.
Marcus Rashford has already scored 16 times since the World Cup ended, being on the top of the list, regarding the best five leagues in Europe. The English striker has been transformed under Erik ten Hag, but Ronaldoâs departure also made things easier for him. He is liberated, communicating better with his teammates. He scored once against Barcelona in Camp Nou and I think that he will find his chances again tonight.
Blaugrana may have the best defensive record in La Liga (keeping a clean sheet on 17 of 22 occasions) but in Europe, they face the danger of conceding far too many times. Old Trafford will not be a friendly environment and Rashford will be the real deal for Manchester United.
