While the match between Newcastle and Southampton, for the EFL Cup semi-finals, is the talk of the town in England today, there is hardly any betting value there. This doesn’t mean that there is nothing to bet on today. We just have to look abroad in Germany and Italy. So let’s get moving. Here are my football betting predictions for Tuesday, 31 January.
I’ve always thought the German Bundesliga is the most underrated league among Europe’s Big 5. If we had a Cinderella story like Union’s in England, Spain, or Italy, we would be talking about nothing else. The cult team from Berlin, a club with a loyal and vocal fanbase, reached the top division of German football in 2019 for the first time in its history. They are now one point behind Bayern in the Bundesliga standings and have reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Pokal, where they are facing Wolfsburg.
Those two seemed like the most in-form teams in Germany after the winter break, but after Wolfsburg’s loss to a miserable Werder Bremen side, the Berliners hold this title by themselves (although an argument could be had for Dortmund as well).
Since the break, Union have three wins in three matches. Those games had an average of three goals in total. Wolfsburg’s goal tally is even more impressive. Six goals against Freiburg, five against Hertha, and a 2-1 loss at Werder.
If it were a league tie, I would go the Union way. But with it being the Cup, I feel more confident hunting goals. Especially when the over 2.5 goals option is valued so high by the best football betting sites.
Inter is in the middle of a pretty bad run, which seems okay just because Milan and Juventus are so miserable. Atalanta started 2023 with a bang. Four wins and two draws is the Bergamaschi’s tally. In this six-game run, Atalanta have never scored less than two goals in a game, with a grand total of 22 goals.
Both coaches will rest some of their starters, as the league is certainly the priority here. Especially for Inter, this mini-local derby can be somewhat spared, as the real deal comes next Sunday, when they face neighbours Milan.
Out of the two, the one that shows the most character is certainly Atalanta, that is why I am going to back them, with a +0.5 handicap.
